The view from Mt. Constitution is a spectacular one, well worth the sometimes baffling twisting, winding, sharp-turning bus ride it takes to get to its top, Heidi, our gregarious bus driver, shared her two cents worth with our guide, all the while expertly maneuvering her bus around the many turns of the Civilian Conservation Corps built road.
Mt. Constitution is located in Moran State Park on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands in the State of Washington. It is the highest peak in the islands at 2,409 feet of elevation. Also atop the mountain is a stone tower, patterned after medieval ones, according to the guide books. The island is named not for the whales are frequently seen in the islands, but is one of the many names of the Mexican viceroy who sent an expedition to explore the islands in 1791.
