BERLIN — Surveying the small gathering at the Northland Restaurant Monday night, presidential hopeful John Delaney said he has heard Berlin’s story all over the country. While the country’s cities are growing at unbelievable rates, rural areas have lost population and jobs.

The Maryland Democrat noted the population of the United States has grown by 75 million people since 1990 but rural counties across the country have lost 3 million people during the period. Counties with populations greater than 1 million have seen 100,000 new businesses created in the last five years. In contrast, counties with fewer than 1 million people have lost 25,000 businesses.
