Until just a few weeks ago, Hannah Daman and IRL sisters Megan Sabine (née Martelle) and Francesca Martelle played music together under the moniker “Hannah Daman and the Martelle Sisters,” a pragmatic name that bore an unfortunate resemblance to the similarly named Woody Allen film, and no lady-led power trio needs that baggage. With their new album SPACE and the full-time addition of Dan Capaldi on drums, Hannah, the Sisters and Dan have decided to take on a new name: Sibylline.

With origins in ancient Greece, a Sibyl is an oracle. Sibyls spoke directly with the divine and were often found in places where the veil between the earthly realm and the underworld thins — such as caves or springs, or even just hanging out on fancy thrones perched atop giant steaming cracks in the earth or whatever. These priestesses offered wisdom and, in certain circumstances, grim auguries. Sibyls have woven themselves into art and literature ever since, from Shakespearean verse to, now, these four musicians in Portland, Maine.
