To The Editor:

Today at church, I enjoyed the sermon for the first day of Advent. It was commonsensical and brought back Christ into a barren, secular landscape. And more importantly, it reminded me of my youth in the 1940s and 50s (I know I’m dating myself). It was a transition period when God was being kicked out of schools, government, and the Village Square. Xmas was the word of the day. That didn’t sell well. People wanted Christ in Christmas. So, then they came up with Happy Holidays when people wanted Christ put back into Christmas. After that, Christ’s birth day started to change from a religious holiday with an exchange of gifts to a commercial holiday with the emphasis on as many gifts as possible.
