BROWNFIELD — Stone Mountain Arts Center is thrilled to present a truly special and limited-run collaboration between two of the most respected ensembles in contemporary folk music: Canadian quartet The Fretless and Swedish folk legends Väsen-Duo. This rare “power double-bill” brings together genre-bending fiddle traditions from both sides of the Atlantic in an afternoon concert that promises intensity, virtuosity, and joy.
Väsen-Duo, featuring Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson, represents nearly 40 years of musical partnership. Their sound — rooted in the traditional music of Uppland, Sweden — has been refined through decades of touring, recording, and deep musical exploration. Known for their playful, seemingly telepathic interplay, Marin and Johansson deliver music that is intense and humorous. Since first meeting in 1983 at Oktoberstämman in Uppsala and releasing their debut recording Det rister i Örat in 1985, the duo has continued to honor tradition while fearlessly breaking new ground. Their performances feature an extraordinary array of stringed instruments, including nyckelharpa, kontrabasharpa, oktavharpa, violoncello da spalla, and even blue electric bass-viola.
