On the 31st of March 1776, Abigail Adams writing to her husband, John, implored him to “remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.” John Adams would play one of the major roles in the writing of the Declaration of Independence, and Abigail, who fully supported the cause of independence from Great Britain (“I long to hear that you have declared an independency.”), wanted him to remember that “ . . . all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”

John’s reply made light of the subject and it would take another 145 years before women gained the right to vote, but time and time again women have defied the obstacles set in their paths and made their contributions to our country’s history.
