Memorial Day is upon us. This day originally honored the Civil War dead, and now honors all service members and veterans who died while in the service to the United States during peace and war. This includes the 12 major wars the United State has fought in, in addition to other conflicts.
In the past year, New Hampshire remembers Staff Sergeant Tanner Grone of Gorham, a U. S. Army “Night Stalker” with four other soldiers who were killed in his Special Operations unit when their MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean Sea. And we remember Marine Captain Jack Casey of Dover and four other Marines who were killed in a CH-53E helicopter as part of a helicopter training exercise in Pine Valley, California. These men paid the ultimate sacrifice in peacetime to keep the peace.
