BERLIN — Tempers flared at Monday’s city council work session with one councilor walking out and others differing over the handling of complaints about the tax abatement process.

In a letter sent to Mayor Paul Grenier and City Manager James Wheeler, Councilor Lucie Remillard said she felt the council had not been supportive enough of the board of assessors at the July 15 meeting when several taxpayers had complained that their tax abatement applications had been denied. The taxpayers noted that all three members of the board had applications approved as did the son of one member.
