I disagree with Dave. No offense Dave. Not only should the police pursue shoplifters, but they should publicize it widely. We have not yet become a lawless nation, but allowing shoplifting will only lead to law-breakers believing they can get away with more serious crimes. This has already been proven in New York City, where the crime rate dropped by 65% when smaller misdemeanors were paid attention to. Law breakers are not like you and me Dave. They are constantly looking for an open lane to move forward with getting something for nothing. Draw the line, or live in a lawless society. I pulled over when the cruisers passed me with lights flashing. They were driving quickly, but not recklessly. I applauded them as they passed!

Hmmm. Most jurisdictions do not allow pursuits for misdemeanors. Catching a shoplifter is not worth it, endangering innocent lives.
