Messiah McMaster of Berlin wants to represent himself on charges that he set fire to his neighbor's house on Main Street in Berlin back in February 2022.
BERLIN — Charged with setting fire to his neighbor's house in 2022, Messiah McMaster is on his third defense attorney. He has now filed a motion in Coos County Superior Court to serve as his own attorney.
McMaster, 39, of Berlin was indicted on charges of burglary and arson for allegedly entering the 1545 Main St., home of Richard and Janet Chevarie in the early morning hours of Feb. 28, 2022, and setting it on fire. He was also indicted on two Class A misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief, charging McMaster with spray-painting in orange paint the words, “God kills” on the exterior of the Chevaries’ burned out house and on their pick-up truck. McMaster has pleaded not guilty to the charges, arguing he was not even in the state on the day of the fire.
