PORTLAND — With extreme temperatures expected across the region later this week, AAA Northern New England is reminding motorists to take precautions to protect children, pets and their vehicles from the dangers of extreme heat.

Even on a relatively mild day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly, creating life-threatening conditions for passengers left behind. Cracking a window provides little relief. A vehicle's interior temperature can rise by up to 80 percent within the first 30 minutes and can exceed 150° F.
