I’ve been thinking lately about how personal style gets influenced and passed down within families. For as long as I’ve known my mom to be my mom, she has always made her personal style choices about comfort and practicality first, while aesthetics came second. This translated to how she decorated our homes growing up.
We lived in a few different places, but the bulk of my upbringing was spent in a chalet that was built in the 1960s. That house was quirky and had lots of funny little built-in features, like this recessed shelf along the stairway wall that also had a mirror behind it. We’d keep framed school pictures on one side of the shelves and keep the other half open so you could glance at your appearance on your way down the stairs. I wonder if that shelf is still there now.
