BERLIN — With $600,000 removed from its previously approved budget, the school department is absorbing the majority of the $833,000 removed from the city’s fiscal year 2026 budget approved by the council and mayor last June.

The council voted Dec. 15 to amend the budget to make the cuts because Burgess BioPower did not make its payment in lieu of taxes on time, leaving an $850,000 deficit in city revenues (see story, page 6).
