The cost of constructing the federal prison in Berlin has increased more than 56 percent from initial estimates. The original cost estimate for the federal prison was $166 million. Seven years later, $259 million has been appropriated for the project.

A recent audit said another $11 million is needed but the federal Bureau of Prisons plans to shift funds in-house to avoid having to request additional funding.
