CONWAY — Local Olympian Sean Doherty remembers his first two trips to the Biathlon Junior World Championships. He was only able to compete because he was able to borrow a biathlon rifle from the Maine Winter Sports Center. The rifles are not cheap — they are a special type that costs close to $5,000 each.
Now 23, Doherty is one of the top biathletes in the country, and competes all over the world for the US Biathlon Team. He often thinks of that generosity and the support he has gotten from so many people. This includes many individuals and business sponsors like Great Glen Trails and Rapid Insight. The generosity has inspired him to want to pay it forward.
Out of this desire, the Jackson Biathlon 5K Trail Race was born. Doherty has partnered with Jackson Biathlon (JXB) to organize the trail race with the goal of fundraising to purchase a new Anschutz Biathlon Rifle for JXB.
“I have had such tremendous support from so many,” noted Doherty. “I want to pay that back and help create opportunities for others to get to the next level in the sport.”
The 5K will take place at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 13, on the trails around the Jackson Biathlon range. The race will have a unique start to it — the racers will start after Doherty clears five targets on the biathlon range.
“We thought this would be a really fun way to start the race and tie in the theme of Biathlon.” said Wayne Peterson, founder of Jackson Biathlon.
The course for the 5K is fun and challenging, with a mixture of pasture, single and double track trails, with beautiful views of the surrounding area.
After the race, Doherty will be doing a short presentation on his experience competing in two Olympics. Attendees will also have a chance to try out the biathlon rifles on the range and learn more about the sport. There will also be a raffle with some amazing biathlon prizes donated by Doherty.
The 5K race is open to all ages and abilities and will also include a 2K fitness walk option. Registration for the race is day of only and costs $30 per person for the 5K or $10 for the fitness walk. Families (up to four) can register for a group price of $75. One hundred percent of race proceeds will go towards the purchase of the Antholz Biathlon rifle for JXB.
Jackson Biathlon is located at 45 Windy Hill Drive in Jackson, just off of Black Mountain Road. For more info on the race contact Wayne Peterson at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the JXB Facebook page at tinyurl.com/yc9su6jj.
