FRYEBURG — Anna Natulak of Fryeburg Academy recently ran in the Southern Maine Class B Regionals. Natulak only a sophomore, just missed qualifying for New England Cross-Country Championships by 8 places, and 8 seconds.
Selection for New Englands is based on the top 25 finishers by times from Class A, B and C.
Run at Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland, Maine, there were 96 girls in the Class B Southern Regional.
Nataluk finished fifth overall in the 5K in 20:41.
The race was won by Cape Elizabeth junior Lila Gaudrault in 19:12. Her teammate Charlotte Degeorge, a freshman, was second in 19:52, and Greely senior Marin Provencher was third in 19:59.
Fellow Raider Juliana Stanton was 40th in 23:21, while Merys Carty was 53rd, 24:10.; followed by Samantha Carus, 61st, 24:33; Hannah Nguyen, 62nd, 24:34; Livia Devires, 80th, 26:34; and Kacey-jane Clark, 93rd, 32:13.
Coach Bill Reilly projects Anna will be one of the top runners in the state next season. By using her experience from this very successful season of running, and a strong off season, and a summer of training there is no limit to what Anna could accomplish next season.
She will certainly take over a leadership role on the Fryeburg team who Coach Reilly hopes will grow in numbers as students will hopefully want to add a varsity team participation to their high school resume, and choose cross-country running as a participant.
