Everyone’s race calendar has been filled these last few weeks. On Aug. 1, Dave, Kerry and Sophie Oedel hosted the I’ll Be Dipped 5K Prediction Race at their home on Silver Lake. There were over 30 people for the event and the lake was a very refreshing finish line.

Winners for the night were Nick Brown, who was under on his guess by 54 seconds, and me, who missed my predicted time by 9 seconds. Hot on the heels of our win, Nick and I will be opening a booth at the Fryeburg Fair, “Fool the Guesser!”

As usual, the Milers pulled together a grand meal with sides, salads and desserts, and Chef Dave grilled hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs. Thank you to the Oedels for hosting this fun event.

This past week, in place of the usual Whitaker Woods White Mountain Milers and EMS Trail Series, many of us travelled down to Madison for the Jim Wellinghurst 5K on Tuesday. There were 66 finishers at the Silver Lake Railroad Station and the final finisher had a full police escort through the finish line.

Top honors for the night went to Nick Brown of Madison in 16:15, and Albany’s Leslie O’Dell in 18:36.

Age group winners were 12-and-Under: Brady McHenry, 32:39, and Alyssa Brooks, 34:30; 13-19: Colton Heller, 18:49, and McKayla Dockham, 21:20; 20-29: Jonathan Caputo, 18:55, and Katherine Doyle, 20:14; 30-39: Andrew Drummond, 16:59, and Stacey Abel, 22:46; 40-49: Tim Livingston, 18:56; and Julie Hill, 26:45; 50-59: Darin Brown, 18:15, and Barbara Heller, 30:25; 60-69: Rich Fargo, 20:20, and Donna Cormier, 32:30; 70-79: Frank Holmes, 30:49; and first walker, Gretchen Loeffler, 35:11.

Age group winners received Old Home Week T-shirts, and everyone feasted on ice cream and watermelon. We did have a rare appearance from Chris P. Bacon, who finished 29th in 27:53, and headed right into Silver Lake.

Race Director Heidi L'Amoreaux Forde says, “Thank you all. You helped raise $700 for camp scholarships — our highest amount ever.”

Coach Bernie Livingston is recruiting runners to participate in teams for the new Millen 4x400 relay to be held at the Livingston Oval during halftime of the first Kennett High School home football game. The date is Friday, Sept. 13, starting at around 7:45 p.m. Teams will be co-ed, two men and two women per team.

“If you’re worried about everyone watching you, you’re right, they will be,” says Tim Livingston, Kennett Middle School cross-country coach.

Bernie is putting the teams together for even pacing, so get your name in now. The coveted Millen Cup is at stake. Contact Terry Ballou at therese.ballou@gmail.com for more details.

The annual Kennett Cross-Country Challenge is set to run on Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m., at the Kennett Middle School. Runners from Kennett High School and Middle School, Fryeburg Academy, Molly Ockett and the White Mountain Milers race for the win and a prize that Coach Tim Livingston keeps as a surprise. Dinner and dessert follow the race all for free. No pre-event registration; just be there.

White Mountain Milers and Eastern Mountain Sports Whitaker Woods Trail Run final timed race of the season is this Tuesday, Aug. 13. There have been 201 numbers given out for this year’s series and it’s not over yet. Prizes will be awarded the following week, August 20.

The run is free, but everyone is encouraged to become a member of the White Mountain Milers. Membership is $10 for students, $15 for individual or $20 for a family. The membership fees help to pay for the insurance which covers Milers Events like the trail run.

White Mountain Miler clothing will be on sale at the weekly event and these proceeds go to our Gretchen B. Hatch Scholarship Fund.
