When I first went to Leavitt's Bakery, it was from word-of-mouth and the sign on Route 16. Since then, the mural has gone up, and when I tell visitors about the bakery, I don't tell them to look for artwork. I tell them how to get there, and that there's a big lot on the west side of the road.
If that mural was meant to constitute a "sign," it's not very effective: you only see it when you drive southbound, and it's more decorative than informative. It might take you a second to analyze what you saw in your peripheral, versus driving by all the other signs on 16 with ubiquitous logos or giant boldface text. It's artwork. We all know it, yet the town is perseverating on calling it out as something else.
If we are going to spend the time, money and attention to artwork such as this (and the murals at Settlers Green), I feel we ought to be asking, "How can we keep this?" and start taking the constructive steps to make it so.
For all the more pressing issues in Conway that affect us, the beautification of the town shouldn't be this contested. Let's spend the time wisely to promote this, not prevent it.
Totally agree! With all the ugly commercial signs (and buildings) allowed all up and down the strip, they are worried about the murals which add beauty and character to what was once a quaint village town. How sad!
