To the editor:

I would like to give my gratitude to William Marvel for his very interesting July 9 column titled “Remembering America.”

In it he says, “He cherished our civil liberties, which exceeded those of the rest of the world (and still do).” I have lived in nine different countries, and never did I have the feeling that I enjoyed fewer civil liberties in the eight other countries than I did in America.

The major differences that I noticed when I compared America to the other eight countries is that America is the only one lacking in socialized medicine and the only one in which people are allowed to carry firearms in public.
