To the editor:
I hate to be a Johnny-come-lately; however, I'm against the town turning the old rec center (the Community Building in Center Conway) into house lots.
As a past selectman and resident of Center Conway, I feel it would be a mistake for the long haul. Green space is an important feature of any village.
I have spoken to Town Manager Tom Holmes as well as a couple of selectmen on what I feel would be a showpiece for our area. If we are serious about moving forward with Rails to Trails, this area would make a good location to access the trails.
There would be ample parking, about 3 miles to Fryeburg and about 5 miles to the Hemlock Lane access.
I think it would help in future grant funding to show we would have a town park as an anchor. It might be possible to rent space for a bike shop to rent bicycles. It also might be a spot to use in the winter for snowmobile access as well.
Workforce housing is an important issue in the area; I just don't feel that this is where it should go.
I plan to provide the selectmen with a petition for town meeting to direct the selectmen to retain ownership of this property.
