To the editor:
Advocates of impeachment have been claiming that President Donald Trump asked Ukraine to “dig up dirt” on Joe Biden. That is a false statement.
Their thinking seems to be shaped by memories of the 2016 Clinton campaign, which reached out, through Fusion GPS, to ask Russians to dig up dirt on Trump, and if they could not find any, to make some up. The well-known result was the fantasy document known as the “Steele Dossier.”
Trump’s request to Ukraine was very different. He asked them to investigate a specific allegation, and determine whether it was true.
This was not a broad fishing expedition, but a narrowly-focused and reasonable request to follow up on reporting in even the liberal American media.
The man who has ultimate responsibility for U.S. law enforcement would have been negligent to do less.
