CONWAY — Citing Michaela Clement’s showing in the last election and her willingness to serve, the Conway School Board on Monday voted to appoint the Center Conway resident to fill the seat vacated by Cassie Capone.

Clement, Nick DeVito, Jason Fougere and Mark Hounsell applied to fill the vacancy after Capone announced she was moving to Fryeburg, Maine, on April 24.

I find it interesting that one of the School Committee members asked the candidates if they could support the decision of the Board even if they voted against it. Obviously, the decision of the majority rules. But this question implies that Board members should not speak out against policies enacted against their opposition. This is undemocratic and helps perpetuate a "Politburo"-type mindset on the Board and should be rejected. One can be a loyal and productive member of the Board and continue to have opinions that are contrary to a majority decision and this independence should be supported.
