BERLIN — A Massachusetts man was killed Friday when his ATV went off the trail and over a slight embankment while riding in Jericho Mountain State Park.
N.H. Fish and Game reported William Vannett, 59, of Middleborough, Mass., was operating an ATV on Holt’s Revenge Trail when he failed to navigate a left turn on a downhill section. The ATV went off the trail and dropped over a slight embankment.
Vannett was wearing a helmet and eye protection, officials said.
A 911 call reported the accident at 5:42 p.m. and the caller reported Vannett was unconscious and not breathing. He was declared dead at the scene.
A Coos County Sheriff’s deputy, Berlin police officers, Berlin firefighters,and Berlin EMS responded to the scene along with a Fish and Game conservation office.
Vannett’s body was taken by Berlin Fire Department’s rescue UTV from the scene to Jericho Lake Road, where it was transferred to the custody of Bryant’s Funeral Home in Berlin.
The Coos County Medical Examiner’s Office assisted in the investigation.
This crash is under investigation; speed appears to be a primary factor.
Earlier Friday, a 14-year old Laconia youth was injured in a dirt bike accident in Colebrook. The youth was operating in a field off Cascadden Road in Colebrook when he lost control of the dirt bike while making a turn. The youth suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
He was taken to Upper Connecticut Hospital in Colebrook and then air-lifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
