CONWAY — The North Conway Public Library will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony on its multimillion-dollar project to renovate and expand the historic library building on Main Street in North Conway Village on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m.

Light refreshments will be served and speakers will include Danielle Nutting, John H. Fuller Elementary principal; Harrison Kanzler, state representative; and Michael York, New Hampshire State Librarian.

The construction of the new addition will mirror the original 1911 building in look and size, creating space for a big meeting room, a smaller conference room, a reading room, and enlarged spaces for children and teens among other enhancements.

The existing building will undergo renovations to bring the building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, getting bathrooms, stairways and small spaces up to code, and adding an elevator to make it all handicap-accessible. It will be a “modern, state-of-the-art library in a magnificent, historic building.”

The library board of directors announced last summer the generous financial gift of patron Lyman Pope to renovate and enlarge the well-loved public icon. Their capital campaign, “An Exciting New Chapter,” kicked off in October with the goal of raising $745,000 to outfit the interior spaces.

“Community support and excitement for this new chapter in the library’s history has been heartwarming to see,” Library Director Andrea Masters said. “People come into the library and are so happy and leave contributions to help us reach our goal. We still have a long way to go and are available to talk to about this capital campaign if anyone would like to learn more about the campaign.”

The library is open Tuesday through Saturday; with hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
