CONWAY — In a profession born of passion, Richard Check opened Country Cabinets etc. in 1976 to turn woodworking skills learned from his father, from hobby to career. Now, this fall they'll be celebrating 43 years in business.

A 1964 graduate of the University of New England, Check became a science teacher and eventually worked up to principal for Barnstead Elementary.

After six years, Check said, “I was doing woodworking on the side outside of work when I decided to turn my hobby into my career because I enjoyed working with people and I enjoyed the art of woodworking.”

In the early years, Check took on the whole operation — designing and building all the cabinetry in his house and garage before finally moving to the current location on East Conway Road.

Now he no longer has to take on everything. Today, Country Cabinets etc. has three designers on staff and an installation crew.

While the primary focus is the retail of cabinetry, Country Cabinets etc. also offers one-on-one consultations with staff designers to create custom pieces.

“We really have something for every room of the house,” Check said.

“We always invite customers to come check out our products on display in our 1,500-square-foot showroom or to sit down with a designer if they know exactly what they’re looking for, or even if they’re in need of some direction.”

Country Cabinets etc. carries major brands such as Cabico, Medallion and Waypoint.

But cabinets are just the beginning. They also offer a full selection of kitchen, bath and entertainment centers.

Laminate countertops are available, and Country Cabinets etc. is also a certified granite and quartz countertop dealer.

In addition, “we have one of the largest selections of decorative hardware in the valley,” Check noted.

Check credits the success of Country Cabinets etc. to the loyal customer base in the valley.

“Most of our business is from referrals, so we really value our customers,” he said, adding, “We work both with remodelers and new construction, so we know how to work with outside contractors.”

For those unsure where to start on a remodeling project, fear not — Country Cabinets etc. can help.

“We can coordinate the whole process for our customers by working with those we trust — from electric to sheet rock to painting,” Check said.
