The Berlin High School girls’ basketball team entertained a strong Newfound team (11-3) and lost 47-34 Tuesday night at the Berlin High gym. Things were close after one period, as Berlin trailed 9-7, and found themselves only down by 6, (23-17) going into the halftime break.

At one point, in that secnd period, Berlin was down 21-10, when Makenna Balderrama made two consecutive nice moves in the paint for two hoops to cut the lead to seven points. The Bears came back with a basket but then Kaylee Peare hit a three (one of five) to keep her team in the hunt.

The third period was a tough one for the Mountaineers and helped change the momentum and ultimately the outcome of the game as Newfound’s tenacious, extended zone pressure kept Berlin from getting any points inside, which meant they had to take some long distance shots that didn’t consistently fall for them.

Halfway through the period Newfound was up by 12 points (29-17) before Kaylee Peare hit another three to cut it to nine. Berlin only managed one foul shot from there to the end of the quarter, while the Bears scored another eight enroute to a 14-4 advantage in that period and to take the largest lead of the game (37-21) going into the final period.

Berlin kept plugging, never gave up and actually outscored the visitors 13-10 in that final period but it was too little too late. Kaylee Peare led her team in scoring with 17 points, followed by Balderrama with seven, Makenna Peare with five, two each from Ashlin Lozea and Isyss Remillard, and a foul shot from Madison Cordwell. Newfound was led offensively by Paulina Huckins with 22 points, including eight for nine from the charity stripe.

Of special note, the varsity game was delayed when the Newfound and Berlin junior varsity teams went into overtime before Berlin prevailed 32-30. What an exciting game, especially the extra period, where Berlin High freshman guard Erin McCormick scored five of the six points, including hitting a hoop, stealing the ball on the inbounds pass, scoring again and eventually hitting a free throw. Towards the end of the game Erin went down with an injury — hopefully she is OK. Kadence Gendron hit a very important free throw with 3.1 seconds to go to help seal the victory.

McCormick led her team in scoring with seven points, followed by six each from Rayna Bourbeau, and Isyss Remillard, four from Alexa Goulet (who also had numerous offensive and defensive rebounds throughout the game) and four for Arianah Richard, Gendron had three points (all free throws) and two points for Aubree Poirier. An exciting win for the young Mountaineers for sure.

It was refreshing to see a decent crowd at the game, including & especially both the boy’s & girl’s hockey players, all who showed lots of enthusiasm.
