BERLIN — A $500,000 grant from the state’s Business and Economic Affairs will pay for the demolition of seven vacant structures in poor condition, the Berlin City Council learned Monday night.
No matching funds from the city are required, confirmed Pamela Laflamme, director of strategic initiatives, in response to a councilor’s question. The council agreed with the plan as presented.
The addresses of the buildings to be demolished are: 609 Hillsboro St.; 426 Burgess St.; 373 Champlain St.; 98 Hillside Ave.; 422 Champlain St.; 827 Western Ave.; and 37 Cambridge St. Several of the buildings were multi-family dwellings.
Each structure costs about $71,000 for demolition, disposal and testing for any hazardous materials. No timeline on the demolition was given Monday night.
Laflamme said the city decided not to sell some of the buildings because they were in such poor condition.
