The 48th annual Dartmouth Relays took place Jan. 6-8, at Leverone Field House, Dartmouth College. Local White Mountain Milers who attended and brought home some hardware were Steve Dowling, first in the high jump with a 3-foot, 8-inch jump and Terry Livingston Ballou, won the one-mile run with a 5:44.52 finish.
Steve has been trying to get more local athletes to attend these games, and every year I say, "next year I"m going to do it." Maybe next year I will do it after seeing these finishes by 82-year-old Flo Meiler of Shelburne, Vt. Flo entered and won her age group in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, high jump, pole vault, long jump, shot put and weight throw (I don't know what this event is!). Congratulations Flo and you are an inspiration to everyone.
Great news for the White Mountain Milers and White Mountain Milers Half Marathon Director Vince Vaccaro of Tri Tek Events; RRCA has awarded the 2017 RRCA New Hampshire State Half Marathon Championship to the 32nd White Mountain Milers Half Marathon scheduled for Oct. 29. This is an honor and a huge draw for runners to attend our half marathon.
"The goal of the RRCA Championship Event Series is to shine a spotlight on well-run, community-based events and to promote the sport of running by recognizing the top performing runners in the open, masters (40 plus), grand masters (50 plus), and senior grand masters (60 plus) categories for both men and women as RRCA Champions."
Congratulations to everyone involved in this great community event. This race would not happen without our community, volunteers, and athletes.
Mount Washington Road Race has sent along their guidelines for signing up for the 2017 race. If you qualified for a bypass entry, you should have received an email which needs to be returned by Friday, Feb. 10. For those of us who did not qualify based on last year's performance, we can register beginning Wednesday, Feb. 15. This random selection ends on Wednesday, March 1. You will hear by Friday, March 3, if you made the cut and had better start training. If you get a rejection email, you have one more chance to enter the race.
First, make sure you are a White Mountain Miler member. Second, come to our annual meeting on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Tuckerman Brewery.
