Donna Cormier: On The Run: What athletes want for Christmas

  • Published in Running

There’s still time to purchase White Mountain Miler gear. Clothing Czar Frank Holmes can help you out with that hard-to-buy for athlete on your Christmas list. You can see Frank at the Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club, or email Frank at This email address is being protected from spambots. Another good gift for the active person would be a 2017 membership in the White Mountain Milers Running Club. For only $10 individual membership and $15 for the entire family, it’s quite a deal! Go to to sign up today. The club works on a calendar year, so memberships are due Jan. 1, 2017.

I polled a few runners and walkers to find out what they wanted for Christmas and here are a few responses:

For Susan Beane, Santa needs to bring roads that are cleared and sanded on the edges and sidewalks that are not iced. This is a must for all walkers, runners and drivers.

Marianne Jackson is asking Santa for a new hip to get back into running and hey, if he could throw in some new lungs, that would help, too! If these are too much, Santa, Marianne says, “Really, completely not creative but more socks — always more socks”!

Hilary McCoy is wishing for her favorite winter layer — a Patagonia merino short-sleeve T-shirt.

Joann Daly is also looking for clothing in the idea of a gift card to her favorite store to get running gear ... New Balance or Under Armour!

Ashley Benes is hoping a new pair of Dion running snowshoes and a face mask so she can get out into the winter weather. While St. Nick is in the winter gear department, Christine Smith is hoping for cross-country ski equipment for the new snow.

Katja Fox says, “I want to be able to go for a run while at my in-laws! An Alter-G ( would be nice, too.” I’m not sure where Katja’s in-laws live, but I hope she gets to run. I had to check out the AlterG and you should, too. An Anti-Gravity Treadmill and you can even get a bionic leg!

Bernie Livingston is wishing for Kevin Callahan to always wear a shirt at all future summer runs. Speaking of Kevin, he is happy to hear that the Cranmore Hill Climb is coming back. He has a story about beating Bob Benes one year using a very complicated pre-race strategy. You’ll have to ask Kevin for details as they’re not quite fit for print here.

Leslie O’Dell is hoping for and sending wishes for staying injury-free.

Barb Renda is hoping for socks that are lightweight and warm. Joe LaRue is looking for motivation. My daughter, Laura Holtby, is wishing for new running clothes and daughter, Sara Holtby, is looking for a new running jacket (she also sent along a photo).

Alex Johnson is hoping to find a pair of Salomon Snowcross sneakers under the Christmas tree, “So I can run better through the winter!”

Amalia Torres answered my inquiry with: “I do not know if you are serious. I want a new pair of knees, and perhaps feet too. I am still having the heart for the ‘go.’ Merry Christmas to you, too. Should I write to Santa, too?”

I would, Amalia. I don’t know if he reads my column.

Merry Christmas everyone. This list isn’t appearing too late for the people mentioned to receive these gifts or for ideas for others on your list. Hint, hint, I like them all!

“This is about doing something difficult and not stopping when it becomes not just difficult, but cold and difficult ... or cold and wet and difficult ... or cold and wet and dark and difficult.” — Anonymous
