Buzzell sent man a threatening message before murder suicide

CONWAY – A man told authorities that he received a threatening message from Mark Buzzell the same day that Buzzell apparently shot his wife and shortly before Mark Buzzell killed himself.

Maine State Police believe Mark Buzzell, 52, of Fryeburg, shot and killed his wife, Jody Buzzell, 52, on Monday afternoon. Her body was discovered in her home around 1 a.m. Tuesday. Four hours later, Mark Buzzell's body was found in a nearby seasonal residence that is owned by a relative.

The Conway Police log entry, made at 7 p.m. Monday, says a man contacted police about a "domestic situation that is happening in Fryeburg and Conway." The man said a "threatening picture" was sent to his friend.

Conway Police Lt. Chris Mattei confirmed that the man, who received the message, spoke to police.

"(He) had claimed he had gotten some type of threatening message from Mark Buzzell earlier in the day," said Mattei. "He called to report that. At that time, we also received information that there was an incident in Fryeburg involving Mark Buzzell. Our guys went out looking for him."
The man who received the message came to Conway Police Department and there he met with Maine State Police.

"The content of that message and what they talked about I don't know," Mattei said.

Maine Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland declined to comment on the message from Buzzell.

On Tuesday, Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin said "jealously" appears to be a factor in the murder-suicide. When asked if he knew anything of the photo, Potvin said he would defer to Maine State Police.

The Buzzell's friend Rich Goff said it "was common knowledge" that the couple was "in the last out of the last inning of the last game of the season" regarding their marriage.
