Smith campaign announces Freedom Concert Aug. 29

By Lloyd Jones

CONWAY — U.S. Senate candidate Bob Smith, R-Tuftonboro, announced Thursday during an editorial board at The Conway Daily Sun, that his campaign has rented the entire Rochester Fairgrounds Friday, August 29 to hold a Freedom Concert featuring the popular country rock/southern rock band Confederate Railroad.

"We try to think outside of the box and this just came together yesterday," Smith said, Thursday afternoon. "We're doing what we call a Freedom Concert. We've leased the entire Rochester Fairgrounds, 50 acres in size, and we're going to have this huge freedom rally. We're bringing a country group who I happen to know. The name is Confederate Railroad, you probably know them. I happen to know the vocalist who has been a good friend of mine for years and so I called him and they aged to do it. We're going to have fireworks, country music and freedom.

"...We tried to get Ted Nuggent, but we're not done yet," Smith added. "We tried to get the Duck Dynasty folks, but they only wanted $90,000 (to appear)."

The event is schedule for 2 – 10 p.m. Gates open at 2 and entertainment starts at 4 p.m. Rain or shine.

"It's 10 days before the primary and basically the reason for doing it is because (Scott Brown's) got the money — we can't compete with Brown's money so this is a grassroots thing to say to people we're going to have all of our stuff set up so that when they come in they can pick up their signs and sign up if you want to be a poll stander, sign waver, whatever you want to be the last 10 days. It's kind of a thank you very much grass roots people and then if there are other people out there. We're charging $20, but not the $50 they normally get for their concerts.

The day will feature live music, food, vendors, fireworks, speakers and special guests.

General admission tickets are $20 for adults and children under 12 are free.

"We have special front row VIP Patriot Boxes available that hold 12 people for a contribution of only $1,000/box," the Smith campaign stated in a release issued latter Thursday. "Box contribution includes free entry to a private reception and photo opportunity with the Confederate Railroad, Senator Bob Smith, and other special guests. Box requests are first-come, first-served. Choose from: Ronald Reagan, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Col. John Stark, James Madison, Dolly Madison, Live Free Or Die, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Governor Mel Thompson, John Adams, Abigail Adams, John Hancock, Constitution, Nathan Hale, Josiah Bartlett, Declaration of Independence, and John Langdon."

"For good eating'," the release continues, "we will be offering a variety of foods to tempt your palate from burgers and hot dogs and the fixins' for a nominal charge, and BBQ at a slighter higher cost, or for a little bit more, we will offer something 'red hot' for you lobster lovers! And, to complete the evening, we will have an exciting and spectacular fireworks display at the end of the concert big enough to light the sky with bright, flashy red white and blue streaks of light."
