FA softball advances to Western B semis

FRYEBURG — Sophomore Sarah Harriman struck out 11 in a one-hitter to lead top-ranked Fryeburg Academy (16-1) over the ninth-ranked Lakers of Lake Region(9-9) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Fryeburg on Thursday.The Raiders will host No. 5 seed Gray New Gloucester at Legion Field at noon on Saturday. The Patriots (13-4) upset No. 4 Maranacook 3-2 in eight inning on Thursday.
Fryeburg beat Gray 5-0 in their lone regular season encounter on May 16. Harriman struck out nine in pitching a two-hitter that day and got all the offensive support she needed when Maggie McConkey drove in two runs in a four run second inning. Catcher Carla Tripp had two hits in the win along with scoring a pair of runs.
No. 2 Greely (15-2) will host No. 3 Leavitt (12-5) in the other semifinal Saturday.
On Thursday, McConkey hit a three-run homer in the first inning to put the host on the right path in defense of their state title.
Maddie Pearson went 3 for 4 with a double, and Tripp added a pair of hits for the Raiders.
The Regional Finals are scheduled for this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's College in Windham.
The State Championship game is set for June 16 at 3 p.m. at Brewer High School in Brewer, Maine.
