Week in Review -- Jan. 19-25, 2013

Saturday, Jan. 19
• From a new record for January warmth on Sunday, followed by a visit by ABC's "Good Morning America" Tuesday, to an avalanche in Huntington Ravine involving a team of climbers on Thursday, it's been an eventful week on Mount Washington.
• An avalanche that slammed into a dozen climbers on Mount Washington Thursday afternoon sent three people for an 800-foot fall, including a former U.S. Marine who lost his leg in Iraq and was there to raise money for veterans and their families. All members of the climbing team survive.
• A local group, seeking national campaign finance reform, is calling on Carroll County towns to each pass a resolution asking for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution designed to mitigate the impact of big money on politics.
• An Albany landlord who was found not guilty of attempting to kill his tenant in 2011 has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
• Numerous events and activities — on and off the ski trails — are planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Holiday Weekend.

Tuesday, Jan. 22
• The team of climbers rescued off Mount Washington last week following an avalanche that sent three to the hospital is wrestling with the decisions that put them there. "We are well aware that people are going to have issues with how that day went down," says Thom Pollard, a film producer who was documenting the climb.
• Vocal criticism of a proposal to expand the North Conway Community Center has the organization reviewing its plans. "We are looking at a couple different options," says Ryan Sommer, the community center's executive director.
• The prospect of at least a 10 percent increase to the school tax rate is not sitting well with budget committee members, who believe it's too much of a burden for taxpayers to be asked to bear.
• Conway Police Department is interested is reviving its cadet program, but budget committee members aren't sure the timing is right -- especially since the proposed police budget is already up 7 percent.
• U.S. Ski Team member Leanne Smith, of North Conway, has her second World Cup podium finish, this time in Italy.

Wednesday, Jan. 23
• Local teacher Carrie McLane, of Jackson, attends the presidential inauguration in Washington D.C. "It was really cool to be right there, participating in our nation's history while looking back at our history," McLane says.
• Bitter cold temperatures are in the forecast for the next two days. A number of ski events have been called off for safety purposes, and Wildcat Ski Area has announced that it will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
• Incumbent Gene Chandler has signed up for another term as Bartlett selectman.
• Conway School Board is looking at saving money by possibly reducing the number of credits required to graduate.
• County commissioner David Babson's request to unseal investigative reports about three employee grievances was denied by commissioners David Sorensen and Asha Kenney.
• Red Fox Bar and Grille reopens today following an Oct. 7 kitchen fire.

Thursday, Jan. 24
• The coldest weather of the winter so far has arrived, with the thermostat stuck near zero most of the day Wednesday and wind chills dropping to 40 below in some spots.
• Cold temperatures added to the challenge for crews fighting an early-morning house fire in Eidelweiss on Wednesday. Nobody was injured.
• Fryeburg selectmen on Thursday are expected to pass proposed policies for disposing of confiscated alcohol and firearms. This comes months after an anonymous letter, penned to local newspapers, accused police of giving confiscated beer to a highway department employee who then had a party where underage drinkers were present.
• Conway Public Library trustees say that if selectmen's proposed $18,712 budget cut remains in effect, a new library director to replace Tara Thomas will not be hired until July 1.
• A new probation program aimed at reducing jail recidivism is being implemented in Carroll County.

Friday, Jan. 25
• The trial of an Albany man accused of beating a 2-year-old boy nearly to death and assaulting two of the boy's siblings gets under way in Ossipee. The attorney for Justin Roy says his client is innocent and that the child's mother should be on trial.
• Commercial comic book artist Jymn "JK" Woodward and his wife Monica lost almost everything when Hurricane Sandy hit their New York home in October. A benefit dinner is being held Saturday in Fryeburg to help the couple get back on their feet.
• Saying the public's trust needs to be restored, long-time town officials Mark Hounsell and Bill Marvel announce that they are running for two three-year seats on the Conway Public Library trustees.
