5-4-13 Casseroles and Kayaks in Eaton May 4

EATON — Join the Little White Church in celebrating the return of Spring with Casseroles and Kayaks.

On May 4, beginning at 5 p.m., participants will meet at the Eaton beach with their decorated kayaks, canoes or other floating devices. They will proceed to the Little White Church parade fashion on the beautiful Crystal Lake.  Bells, whistles, gongs and other gentle sounds will be heard as they paddle across the lake.

The parade will end at the Edge's beach, across and just around the corner from the town beach. There the boats will be beached and the crowd will continue to the church where a casserole dinner will be served.  Casseroles will include Spinach Lasagne, Turkey Shepherds Pie, Chicken Casserole, Cole slaw, tossed salad, bread, beverages, decaf and a variety of homemade desserts.

After dinner the group will return to the Edge's beach and to the kayaks now festoon with lanterns and lights and paddle back to the town beach enjoying the clear night air and the possibility of some meteor showers as it is the night of the Eta Aquarids (though it is probably more likely to see meteors in the early morning hours of the 4th.)

Leave the boat at home if you wish and join the group for dinner at 6 p.m. at the Little White Church. No reservations required.  Donations will be accepted and will benefit the Little White Church and contribute toward the upkeep of this sacred landmark. For more information call 447-2295.

Odyssey of the Mind team raising money for trip to national competition

FRYEBURG — The Molly Ockett Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team placed first at the Maine State Competition which qualifies them for the World Finals in Michigan. The group now needs to raise about $8,000 to be able to make the trip to Michigan at the end of the month. Members have scheduled the several events to help raise the monies needed.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

The Molly Ockett Middle School Odyssey of the Mind Team is comprised of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. They competed against 14 teams at the Maine State Tournament on April 6 and took first place. In advancing to the World Finals Tournament, they will compete against teams from the United States and other countries on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., from May 22-26.

To raise the money needed the team has put together these fund-raisers:

• Friday, May 3: Movie Night at the Performing Art Center at Fryeburg Academy featuring "Les Miserables," at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per ticket

• Saturday, May 4: A yard sale 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at 532 Main Street in Fryeburg, Maine.
