Wildflower Walk June 16

6-7-12pitcehrplantsOSSIPEE — Green Mountain Conservation Group will offer a wildflower walk at the Health Pond Bog trail head on Route 25 in Ossipee at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16.

From Center Ossipee, take Route 25 east and park along the roadside (there is a small pullout) just past a granite marker. Naturalist Barbara Bald of Alton, and Green Mountain Conservation Group staff will lead a guided hike through this kettle hole bog system.

Heath Pond Bog provides a classic example of bog succession from open water to sphagnum-heath-black spruce bog. It contains an exceptionally large number of plant species and has great value for scientific study. There is a greater variety of bog plants here than at any other peatland in the state. The property is owned by the State of New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development.

Those visiting the bog should be aware that the path can become wet close to the pond, and the peat mat is quite loose in places near the edge of the open water, so great care must be taken when venturing away from the upland.
