Jim was a graduate of Fryeburg Academy, Class of 1948, and attended nearly every one of the class reunions over the past 65 years. In 1952, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He also worked for Bear Paw Lumber Corporation as their Traffic Manager responsible for shipment of hardwood lumber to many and various markets, from 1992 until his retirement in 2005.

From an early age, Jim was noted for being an extraordinary dancer. Many a young lady was honored to dance with Jim; the last, Betty Walker, celebrating her 100th birthday, stated that she would dance only if she could dance with Jim Record. Jim's specialty was the polka.
