The Legal Corner: Personal injury law, part two: What to do right after an accident

By Edward D. Alkalay
It has come to my attention that part II of my series on personal injury law has not yet been in the paper. Part III (negotiating with an insurance company) recently ran. Consequently, this article will serve as a "prequel" and was meant to run as part II.

In my first article on personal injury law, I wrote about the possible damages that you can recover if you have been injured in an accident due to someone else's negligence. Recovery of damages is often the first thing that people who have been injured ask about. However, in terms of proving a case, damages are the final piece to the puzzle. This article will focus on what to do right after an accident occurs. Whether you are injured in an automobile accident, a fall due to a negligent condition, or any other injury due to someone else's negligence, there are a number of things that you should do right away. (For purposes of this article, I will focus on automobile accidents, but the suggestions contained herein apply to any personal injury case.)

Michael Kline: How to make resolutions and goals work

By Michael Kline
Honestly, most of my past resolutions were the tried and true classics like lose weight, give up this or that, work harder, be more disciplined, be less judgmental and the like. For the most part, I've failed fabulously at most of these as resolutions. On the other hand, I've had some successes on some of these and many more goals, not as resolutions, but only when they became truly important to me, at a time that made sense to me. I don't know everything about goal setting, but I know this: The time to choose what is most important is not at 11 p.m. on Dec. 31 after drinking your fourth vanilla-vodka-valium-choco-fruiti-tini. I know this because the last time I tried it, the only goal I achieved was a dance move that ended up on YouTube! No, I promise, New Year's is a lousy time for serious resolutions and goal setting.
