Harvest Gold plans artist reception, open house

CENTER LOVELL — Harvest Gold Gallery will feature Bridgton textile artist Kimberly Crichton at its annual summer artist reception and open house on Friday, July 14.

The open house will show the gallery’s new summer collection, which includes works from many of the owners’ favorite old artists, as well as from some who are new to the gallery.

Crichton is one of those new artists. A “self-taught artist,” she defines herself as an “advocate and strategist who is drawn to the power of relationships, and who uses art and craft as vital tools of social change.”

Her work, which is carefully sewn netting over delicate hand-printed rice paper, is made to mirror the network of relationships between people and communities.

Each dot on the paper represents the individual self, and the thoughts and patterns that the individual feels when on his or her own. The thread connecting the various dots is reminiscent of how those patterns shift and change as one person reaches out and interacts with another.

“It is a long and slow process, for the paper is quick to tear,” Crichton said. “Life is so hectic, especially in Portland where I used to live, that this was a good way to force myself to slow down, relax, and meditate on what is truly important to me.”

Crichton must adapt traditional embroidery techniques to work on the rice paper. It is this type of adaptation that she says makes art the perfect arena for exploring social change.

Desiring to explore the relationships between men and women, past and present, and traditional and modern craft, Crichton uses tools and methods that are traditionally feminine in new and modern ways to mimic, critique and challenge the large, abstract and highly praised work of various 20th-century male painters.

The artists’ reception and open house will be held Friday, July 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Harvest Gold Gallery.

All are invited to stop by the gallery and enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres, provided by Severance Lodge Club, while perusing the art and chatting with some of the artists.

Harvest Gold Gallery is located at 1082 Main St. in Center Lovell, Maine; just past the Center Lovell Market. For more information on Crichton, the reception, or the gallery in general, contact (207) 925-6503, or visit www.harvestgoldgallery.com.
