BERLIN — The 38 welding students currently at White Mountains Community College and their five instructors — program coordinator Michael Pike, Heather Wells, Andrew Hartford, Stewart White and Jonathan Mullins — are hosting a Weldathon on Thursday, May 4, to benefit the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Lebanon.

"CHaD provides compassionate and excellent care for kids and teens from New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts, and our students have been looking for a way to 'give back,'" Pike explained.

The organizers are seeking to attract 36 teams of four welders, not only from among today's White Mountains Community College students and instructors but also from the ranks of graduates, area high school career technical education students, and Gorham Middle School welding students, as well as industry partners, Wells said.

"Each team is being asked to try to meet a goal of raising $400, but there's no minimum requirement," she said.

"Businesses, banks and area residents who appreciate that families have access to a renowned children's hospital are already stepping up with donations to be used to fill any gaps in teams' ability to raise money."

The event will feature continuous welding from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at each of the college's 36 welding booths.

"Welders will take turns with other members of their team," Pike said. "The idea is for everyone to have a lot of fun while doing good!"

Refreshments will be provided.

White Mountains Community College's spring semester ends on May 8, and the summer semester starts almost immediately on May 15, Wells pointed out. "This makes May 4 a good date; public schools will not be deep into exam preparations."

Donations can be mailed to WMCC: Attention Weld for CHaD, 2010 Riverside Drive, Berlin, NH 03570. Checks should be made out to White Mountains Community College, with "Weld for CHaD" in the lower left side memo section.

All donors will be listed in the event program, as well as on its Facebook page: Advanced Welding at WMCC. If you would like to include it, email an electronic image of your company's logo to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
